The operating system had been having trouble for a while, and it was Windows Vista so it was not great even when it was working correctly. After running out of options for reinstalling Windows I gave up and reached for Linux. After a few false starts I got Ubuntu installed and configured. It went surprisingly well, especially considering it is a laptop. It did not seem to have any hardware issues, not even with the wireless chip. I am still tinkering with it to weed out any bugs but I think it should work fine for my mom's purposes.

My brother and his family came from out of state for the funeral on Friday. I spent 7 hours turning a hand grinder on Saturday to make cranberry relish to give as gifts. Our family Christmas party was on Sunday. My mother spent a good 12 hours baking, and I took delivery of 3 cords of firewood on Monday. And today we had a quiet sit down to open presents. I got several mystery novels and a tube of brand new tennis balls, both of which I asked for, so I did pretty good. I will likely spend the remainder of the day relaxing with a lovely beverage, trying to decide what Christmas themed movie sounds best for this evening.
